Mary Jenner is a pediatric nurse, entrepreneur, and healthcare innovator dedicated to improving how care is experienced by patients, families, and clinicians.
Drawing from lived experience as a nurse, parent, patient, and founder of The Butterfly Pig and the Innovative Care Institute, her work sits at the intersection of emotional safety, clinician support, and trauma-informed care.
Mary’s medical play and preparation tools are now used in more than 140 hospitals worldwide, reflecting a growing movement toward developmentally supportive, dignity-protecting care.
Through product design, pilot programs, and collaborative initiatives with healthcare teams, she focuses on translating research and lived experience into scalable solutions that strengthen trust and support clinicians.
Her work centers on a simple belief: compassionate people are not the problem — systems that lack supportive infrastructure are.
The Care Rewritten community is full of dedicated leaders, Nurses, Child Life Specialists, and parents who remain deeply rooted in the belief that patient care comes first, yet find themselves navigating the heavy metrics of a system that often leads to emotional harm and moral injury.
They are tired of "trendy" initiatives, seeking instead evidence-backed, sustainable solutions that fit seamlessly into real clinical workflows. Mary serves those who are protective of their hospital’s reputation and hungry for a way to make care feel human again for patients, families, and frontline staff. Above all, her audience wants to move beyond survival mode and reclaim the pride that comes from measurable, trauma-free patient experiences.

I appreciate the insight the speaker had as a nurse. I personally feel like it's not too often we get to see a nurse's perspective, especially on trauma in healthcare. It was unique to see how as a nurse she was affected by the things she was part of and witnessed. To see how she took her experiences working directly with children and families and created something so impactful, like medical play toys! That is special and helpful for all those working closely with children in the medical field. - Anon CCLS
What resonated with me is how small adjustments in communication, preparation, and environmental support can significantly reduce fear and increase a child’s sense of control. And how unfamiliar language, sudden transitions, or lack of choice—highlighted how proactive trauma prevention truly is. What also resonated with me is remembering that trauma-informed care is a shared responsibility across all disciplines. Every team member can contribute to safety, predictability, and emotional well-being felt both empowering and actionable. And the importance of slowing down, partnering with families, and consistently prioritizing the child’s perspective was a valuable reminder that the way we deliver care can be as impactful as the care itself. - Anon CCLS
As a music therapist and a mom of a medically complex child, I appreciated hearing Mary advocate for providers to "pause." Even in circumstances when it feels like there are no alternatives, taking a moment to think through ways healthcare professionals and parents can better support the child can make the world of difference when considering their ability to cope in the future. - Anon Music Therapist
